A Chill Out Zone provides a calming space where people of all ages can relax, especially beneficial for people who find busy places overwhelming due to sensory challenges.

If you would like to include a Chill Out Zone at your next community event, check out the Chill Out Zone Guide for tips on how to facilitate a quiet space.

Creating a Chill Out Zone

Community groups and schools can borrow equipment for free to create their own Chill Out Zone at events, promoting inclusion and a sense of belonging.

Equipment available to borrow for free:

  • 6 x bean bags,
  • 2 x tear drop ‘Chill Out Zone’ flags (great for outdoor events),
  • 2 x bases for tear drop flags
  • 1 x pull up ‘Chill Out Zone’ banner (best for indoor events),
  • Noise reduction earmuff kit including signage
  • Sensory resources box including mindful colouring sets and pencils
  • Metal A-frame corflute sign, detailing purpose of Chill Out Zone.

To request to borrow any of the above items, email cdo@mandurah.wa.gov.au. A confirmation email will be sent to you confirming the booking and providing collection and return instructions.

Joining a local disability network helps individuals, groups, and providers access valuable resources, information, and advocacy opportunities. It offers a platform for networking with professionals, volunteers, and people with disability, fostering personal and professional growth. Members stay informed about local activities and programs, connecting people with disabilities to valued community roles.

Mandurah Disability Network

The Mandurah Disability Network is a group of people who represent disability groups, people with disability and family members. The people who go to these meetings want to work together to help make Mandurah a more accessible and friendly community for people with disability.

The Mandurah Disability Network meets quarterly at the Council Chambers Building at 83 Mandurah Terrace, Mandurah.

Mandurah, Cockburn, Kwinana, Rockingham Access and Inclusion Network (MCKRain)

MCKRain is a partnership between the cities of Rockingham, Mandurah Kwinana and Cockburn. It’s a network that seeks to engage and connect professionals who support and work with people with disability and their families. MCKRain meetings are held throughout the year, and the network is also supported with regular email updates detailing local events, news and information of relevance to people working in the sector.

The Hidden Disability Sunflower is a subtle symbol that indicates the wearer has a hidden disability. It signals to staff or volunteers that the wearer may need extra assistance, understanding, or patience, enhancing accessibility and interactions at events and community activities.

City of Mandurah employees who have completed the Hidden Disability Sunflower awareness training can be identified by their white and green sunflower lanyards, badges, or wristbands.

For a limited time, people with a hidden disability can request a complimentary green sunflower lanyard from the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre or the City of Mandurah Administration building. A Social Story™ explains new experiences and environments to people who are autistic or have sensory sensitivities. A Social Story™ can be helpful for anyone who experiences nervousness when attending a place or event for the first time.
