Mandurah’s exciting Waterfront Project is gaining ground and taking shape, despite current challenges impacting the construction industry due to COVID-19.

The $22m Waterfront Project, with investments from Federal, State and Local Government, is nearing the halfway mark, transforming Mandurah’s foreshore precinct into iconic, vibrant spaces for people to meet, play and rest.

New and exciting spaces along Mandurah’s Eastern and Western Foreshores, and the Smart Street Mall, are changing the face of Mandurah’s City Centre for locals and visitors alike. Investing in a revitalised City Centre will support local tourism and local jobs for long term economic well-being.

So, what’s happening now?

With the completion of the popular Mandurah Skate Park and the new toilet block on the Western Foreshore, Kwillena Gabi Pool on the Eastern Foreshore, and stage one of Smart Street Mall, works are progressing on other areas of the foreshores to bring the Waterfront vision to life.

As is the case with many projects recently, the Mandurah Waterfront Project has experienced some delays due to COVID-19 with the current shortage of building materials and skilled trades.

Western Foreshore Recreation Precinct
These current impacts and shortages mean that the timeline to complete works on the Western Foreshore, including the new Play Space and associated areas, has been delayed. It was initially hoped the Play Space would be completed at the end of 2021, however due to the current COVID-19 situation, manufacturing and material supply issues and contract procurement delays, completion is now expected mid-year.

The project team has been working hard to ensure installation of the 12-metre-high Play Tower is continuing, including finishing touches being made to ground-level works so the structure can be erected. It’s expected the main structure will be installed by late-March, and then the play equipment can be added including ramps, slides, monkey bars and musical instruments.

Other playground features including the boardwalk, slide and cubby pods are being scheduled for installation. There will also be upgrades to the surrounding area including shelters, furniture and the construction of a shared path along the foreshore and around the Play Space, which are all progressing well.

Eastern Foreshore Precinct
There are works progressing along the southern area of the Eastern Foreshore, including planning for a new toilet block, and concept plans in the works for the Eastern Foreshore North Precinct.

With the new Kwillena Gabi Pool opening to the public just before Christmas, surrounding landscaping works are expected to be completed by mid-April. The fencing will be removed and the areas made accessible when it is safe to do so.

Smart Street Precinct
Stage two of the Smart Street Mall works have been put on hold pending the outcome of an exciting development application on the corner of Smart Street Mall and Mandurah Terrace. The decision to hold off works was made to ensure the new development ties into the current design and does not impact on the planned works for the Mall. Works are expected to recommence in May to complete the Western end of Smart Street.

These works are all part of the vision to transform Mandurah into a place where people come to meet, play and rest, and it’s an exciting time for Mandurah and the community.
