About the Event
Mandurah Libraries are excited to present a Book Cubby event with Nature Play WA, to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime 2024.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual nationwide event through the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) to raise awareness of literacy and the importance of how families who share stories build a love of reading in children.
This years National Simultaneous Storytime book is Bowerbird Blues, written and illustrated by Aura Parker.
About the Book
I am a collector. Always looking, finding ... and keeping! Bowerbird loves BLUE. Magnificent cobalt. Brilliant, vibrant blue! But something is missing. What could it be? This picture book from Aura Parker stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for blue! It's a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird's search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower-a mix of natural and unnatural objects-attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.
Storytime Cubbies
Nature Play early years educators facilitate an outdoor cubby building and Storytime event encouraging families, children, and the community to see literacy and reading as a part of everything they do.
Families work together to build a cubby from a range of different materials before joining a group story time and being encouraged to read together in their own cubbies. The session also includes a nature-connection activity that relates to the group story.
All cubby equipment is supplied. Families can choose to bring a favourite story or read one of the books on offer.
Benefits
Storytime Cubbies provide a unique and interactive setting that enhances the learning experience and fosters a love for books and nature.
Nature Play utilises the outdoor setting to create multi-sensory experiences. We encourage children to feel the textures of leaves, smell flowers, or listen to the sounds of birds while reading stories related to these elements. This sensory engagement helps in building stronger connections to the story and enhances comprehension.
