The new playground on the Eastern Foreshore was opened in early March, and has seen many locals and visitors enjoying the new play spaces plus the wider refreshed foreshore areas, especially during Crab Fest weekend.
Mayor Caroline Knight said a range of opinions had been shared recently about the new playground. "We appreciate people taking the time to let us know how they feel," Mayor Knight said.
"The upgraded playground was designed to create a fun, accessible and engaging space that complements the character of the Eastern Foreshore. It includes a mix of natural and traditional play elements like timber logs, climbing features and swings, and was independently assessed to meet Australian playground safety standards before it opened.
"Since its launch, the play area has been well used by both locals and visitors, and most feedback has been incredibly positive. We do acknowledge that some community members have raised concerns about safety, size, and accessibility, and we want to assure you that we are listening.
"It’s important to note that there is a growing body of best-practice thinking in Australia around the value of managed risk in play. Allowing children to experience age-appropriate challenge in a safe environment helps build important life skills like resilience, confidence, and decision-making. Risk doesn’t mean danger — it means giving children the opportunity to test their abilities in ways that support healthy development. This approach is supported by national safety standards and is part of the broader shift in contemporary playground design.
"In terms of accessibility, the playground includes accessible paths, a carousel that can accommodate a wheelchair, and other features designed to support inclusive play. However, we know there’s always room to improve, and we’re continuing to review how the space is used and what might be needed into the future.
"This new playground is part of the broader revitalisation of our much-loved Eastern Foreshore, aimed at creating welcoming, vibrant spaces for all ages. We appreciate everyone’s input and ongoing support."
