Mosquito management is an important community service that aims to protect public health and the outdoor lifestyle we enjoy here in Mandurah and the Peel region. It's important to keep our community informed on mosquito management activities and what you can do to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

Our mosquito management program is highly effective in reducing mosquito populations year-round however mosquito populations constantly fluctuate and at times will impact our lifestyle more than we would like.

Mosquito management is a complex and challenging task due to the constantly changing environmental conditions which determine the intensity of mosquito breeding from week to week, month to month and year to year.

In recent weeks mosquito breeding has intensified across the entire region as a result of persistent tidal flooding to the wetland breeding grounds and favourable environmental conditions that have promoted their breeding cycles.

In response, we have been working with the Peel Mosquito Management Group and WA Department of Health to continue completing aerial larvicide treatments to reduce mosquito larvae populations and restrict the emergence of adult mosquitoes.

Since the start of the 2022/2023 season, 14 treatments have taken place across the Mandurah area.

  • 26 Feb 2023, 192.1
  • 18 Feb 2023, 278.2 hectares
  • 8 & 9 Feb 2023, 414.2 hectares
  • 25 & 26 Jan 2023, 379.8 hectares
  • 11 Jan 2023, 89.5 hectares

While our mosquito management program is very effective at reducing the number of mosquitoes, total elimination is not achievable or environmentally desirable.

We encourage you to be mosquito aware and protect yourself from bites and mosquito borne disease all year round.

  • Cover Up – wear long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, covering as much of the body as you can.
  • Repel – When outdoors, apply insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide), picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus evenly to exposed skin
  • Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus has recently been endorsed by the Western Australia Department of Health as an effective mosquito repellent. Read more on personal insect repellents
  • Clean up – remove, empty or cover water holding containers
