Works are progressing on the Mandurah Waterfront redevelopment, a $22million project that will change the face of Mandurah’s iconic waterfront places and spaces, including the Western Foreshore, Eastern Foreshore and Smart Street Mall.
Despite delays due to the high demand and material shortages in the construction and building industry, progress is being made as we move into the third year of works to transform these iconic spaces for the community and visitors alike.
The completion of a third milestone, the Koolyanga Waabiny Playground on the Western Foreshore, is nearing. So far, the Mandurah Waterfront redevelopment has seen the completion of the Mandurah Skate Park, a new toilet block and surrounding areas on the Western Foreshore, the iconic Kwillena Gabi Pool, and phase one of Smart Street Mall.
Progressing works include:
Smart Street Mall Stage 2
We’re now diving into Stage 2 works at the bottom (western) end of the Smart Street Mall. This will ensure that the bottom end of the Mall ties in with the look and feel of the upgraded top end (Sholl Street side) and complete the connection with the Eastern Foreshore and the Kwillena Gabi Pool.
The decision to hold off on these works initially was made to ensure the new private development on the corner of Smart Street Mall and Mandurah Terrace ties into the current design and doesn’t impact on the planned works for the Mall.
The Smart Street Mall remains open for business and access will be maintained at all times, with a variety of food, shopping, services and entertainment options.
We’re doing our best to minimise the impact during the works over the next couple of months, so head to Smart Street and support these local businesses.
Works are expected to be completed ahead of our very busy December holidays.
Eastern Foreshore works
Works to the southern area of the Eastern Foreshore are nearly complete, and all temporary fencing will be taken down shortly.
Soon we will be moving on to the design and planning stage to replace the current toilet block, as well as design and planning for the northern end of the foreshore. These works, including the remaining reserve upgrades and surrounds, will start around mid-2023 and be completed by the middle of 2024.
Western Foreshore works
The Koolyanga Waabiny playground and surrounding areas will be open to the public soon, with the late arrival of custom equipment to be installed post opening. The space will feature a 12m high play tower, play equipment for children of all ages and abilities, shelters, barbecues and furniture.
This is a very challenging time in the construction industry and the City would like to thank the community and businesses for their patience, and ask for your continued support as we navigate some of these challenges.
