About the Event
The Big Read is back, and in this winter edition our amazing Big Read authors are Karen Herbert, Leigh Straw and Emma Young. The afternoon will begin with a panel discussion, followed by a decadent high tea and you chance to chat with the authors.
The River Mouth - Karen Herbert
Fifteen-year-old Darren Davies is found face down in the Weymouth River, a gunshot wound to his chest. The killer is never found. Ten years later, his mother receives a visit from the local police. Sandra’s best friend has been found dead on a remote Pilbara road. And Barbara’s DNA matches the DNA found under Darren’s fingernails. When the investigation into her son’s murder is reopened, Sandra begins to question what she knew about her best friend. As she digs, she discovers that there are many secrets in her small town, and that her murdered son had secrets too.
Petticoat Parade: Madame Monnier and the Brothels of Rose Street - Leigh Straw
Josie de Bray was a brothel madam who owned most of Roe Street, Perth from WWI up to the 1940s. This immensely readable social history uses the life of Josie de Bray as conduit into the lives of her friends and competitors – the many women who paraded in their petticoats on the verandas of Roe Street, who were kept from the public view and were secret keepers themselves in the seamier side of town.
The Last Bookshop – Emma Young
Cait is a bookshop owner and book nerd whose social life revolves around her mobile bookselling service hand-picking titles for elderly clients, particularly the grandmotherly June. After a tough decade for retail, Book Fiend is the last bookshop in the CBD, and the last independent retailer on a street given over to high-end labels. Profits are small, but clients are loyal. When James breezes into Book Fiend, Cait realises life might hold more than her shop and her cat, but while the new romance distracts her, luxury chain stores are circling Book Fiend’s prime location, and a more personal tragedy is looming.
