The City of Mandurah has been awarded $1.32million through the State Government's 2025–26 CoastWA grant program for a major upgrade to the ageing seawall at Town Beach. This area was identified as one of WA's 55 coastal erosion hotspots in the 2019 statewide assessment conducted by the Department of Transport (DoT) and Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH).

The grant is part of a $3.01million statewide initiative to safeguard WA's coastline from coastal hazards, such as erosion and inundation. Administered by DPLH and DoT, CoastWA supports high-impact projects that deliver long-term coastal protection.

As well as significant upgrades to a 200m stretch of seawall, works at Town Beach will include public safety improvements and landscaping to support native seedling growth.

These works align with the City's Northern Beaches Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP), which outlines strategies to address the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels. The upgraded seawall will protect beachgoers, contribute to long-term coastal resilience, and help preserve public infrastructure including the dual-use path, carparks, and the Seashells Resort.

"Town Beach is one of our most popular coastal locations, but also one of our most exposed, so we are grateful to the State Government for helping us to protect one of our most vulnerable stretches of coastline," Mayor Caroline Knight said.

"This is a vital coastal protection project that will help us to safeguard highly used community assets against the impacts of climate change. We want to ensure Town Beach remains safe and accessible for future generations."

Works are planned to start in early 2026, so stay tuned for updates as we prepare to begin this vital project.
