About the Event
Mandurah’s Smart Street was the first pedestrian shopping mall to be established outside of the Perth Metropolitan area. Coming at a time when shopping malls were reaching the peak of their popularity in the 1970s many communities around the world were trying to revitalise their towns by closing shopping precincts to traffic.
Before becoming a mall, Smart Street was a cheerful residential street with holiday accommodation, and in the 1870s was the home to Smart’s Fish Cannery, the first of its kind in town.
