About the Event

The theme for National Reconciliation Week this year is Be a Voice for Generations, encouraging all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation through storytelling.

Join us for a special screening of Mabo, a film that tells the story of one of Australia’s national heroes – Eddie Koiki Mabo, who in 1973 was shocked to discover that the ownership of the land his ancestors had passed down on Murray Island in the Torres Strait for over 16 generations, was not legally recognised as theirs. He began an epic fight for Australian law to recognise traditional land rights. Eddie never lived to see his land returned to him, but the name Mabo is now known in every household throughout the country. Five months after his passing, the High Court overturned the notion of terra nullius.
