About the Event
This is a two-hour professional development presentation for artists from any discipline interested in understanding how to work in the public art and placemaking space.
Participants will gain practical knowledge and insights into the processes, opportunities, and challenges of creating meaningful public artworks in contemporary contexts. This session combines presentation, discussion, and interactive activities to build confidence and readiness for public commissions.
Topics include:
- The origins and purpose of public art
- Overview of Percent for Art programs (State vs Local Government)
- Commissioning roles and responsibilities
- Defining public art forms and approaches
- How to respond effectively to Expressions of Interest
- Understanding contracts, insurance, and arts law
- End-to-end case studies from real projects

Meet the Facilitator
Helen Curtis is a curator and the founder of Apparatus, a Perth-based creative consultancy specialising in the integration of art into built design projects. Educated at Claremont School of Art and the University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Fine Arts), she brings more than twenty years of experience in fine art, cultural heritage, placemaking, and art collection management, policy, and strategy. Helen serves on several advisory panels and is recognised for her collaborative approach, cultural sensitivity, and leadership in shaping Western Australia’s art and design landscape.
