This autumn, you’re invited to take part in the 2026 Western Ringtail Possum Tally, a citizen science project led by Wirambi Landcare, in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and supported by the City of Mandurah.
Western ringtail possums are a critically endangered species found in Mandurah and across the south‑west. Ongoing habitat loss has caused significant population declines, especially in Dawesville, Bouvard, Herron, and Lake Clifton, making community‑collected data more important than ever.
Why participation matters:
- Every observation helps fill critical knowledge gaps
- You don’t need to venture far to contribute; sightings from backyards, parks, and local reserves all make a difference
- Results help guide conservation planning and habitat protection
- It’s an engaging activity for families and nature lovers
How to get involved
The autumn tally runs from 1 April – 2 May. During this this time, participants can record and submit their sightings through iNaturalist or via a tally sheet (email wrtp.wirambi@gmail.com to request).
Whether you're a seasoned nature lover or a curious beginner, this tally is a great way to contribute to science, learn about local wildlife, and enjoy the outdoors.
