Three of Mandurah’s long-standing Elected Members have been awarded for their outstanding community leadership and contribution to local government.

Councillors Dave Schumacher, Peter Jackson and Peter Rogers received Local Government Honours at WALGA’s Local Government Awards on August 2, which recognise those who go above and beyond in serving their communities.

Cr Jackson and Cr Schumacher both received Merit Awards for their notable contributions and loyal service to local government, and distinguished service and commitment to the community. Cr Rogers was awarded the Troy Pickard Young Achievers Award for his commitment, contributions and leadership in local government, and his continual self-development and professional learning.

Mayor Rhys Williams congratulated the Elected Members on their outstanding community leadership over the span of many years, and the lasting contributions they have made on Mandurah’s local government landscape.

“It’s an honour to represent Mandurah alongside these respected, long-standing leaders, and I’m so pleased their efforts and dedication have been recognised,” Mayor Williams said.

“These Elected Members go above and beyond in their roles. Their dedication and enthusiasm for working together with our community to make Mandurah an even better place is amazing to see. I’m proud to be part of an incredible group of people who have Mandurah’s best interests at heart and lead with integrity every day.”

Cr Dave Schumacher – Local Government Merit Award


Cr Schumacher was first elected to Mandurah Council in 2009. During his 15 years on Council, he has actively participated in more than 18 committees, panels and boards, playing a pivotal role in shaping the local government scene. He was an inaugural member of the Reconciliation Steering Committee where he served for eight years promoting reconciliation and strengthening community relationships. He was also Chairperson of the Mandurah Liquor Accord where he was instrumental in addressing alcohol-related issues and enhancing public safety. As well as his work on Council, Cr Schumacher has also held positions on more than 10 community charity and non-profit boards and committees, helping to raise much-needed funds and donations for the community and making a real difference to the lives of Mandurah residents. He is co-founder of Mandurah Charity Inc and Squared Away Inc which support local initiatives and community needs.

A valued member of Council since 2012, Cr Jackson has a deep understanding of the city’s needs stemming from his long career in media and education. He has been an active member of many significant boards and committees including Chair of the Mandurah Liquor Accord, the Community Grants Panel and Chair of the City’s Audit and Risk Committee, ensuring financial responsibility and strategic oversight. He has been instrumental in many capital works and initiatives that have significantly impacted the community, including the Mandurah Matters campaign, and the City’s new Events Strategy. Cr Jackson is a passionate advocate for engagement with the local community, which includes hosting monthly citizenship ceremonies.

Cr Rogers has been on Mandurah Council since 2014, continually striving to achieve the best outcomes for Mandurah and dedicated to learning and self-development. He has more than a decade of legal, governance, and strategic leadership experience in the non-profit, government and university sectors, and also has experience serving on several non-profit boards. Cr Rogers has made many multifaceted and notable contributions to local government, from policy development to community engagement, reflecting a deep commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and fostering sustainable growth for the region. In his 10 years on Council, Cr Rogers has served on many committees, boards and advisory groups as the local government representative. This includes the Audit and Risk Committee (current Chair), Mandurah Performing Arts Centre Board, the Company Secretary for Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation and South West Aboriginal Medical Service. He has displayed ongoing leadership in governance, compliance and risk management, and local government reconciliation planning and projects including the Yaburgurt Public Art project, dual naming of city places and spaces, and Indigenous trainee positions.
