The community will be able to watch recorded Mandurah Council meetings from this month in a move towards greater access to the decision-making process of Council.
Mandurah Council approved the recording and future livestreaming of Council meetings, with recordings being made available for public viewing commencing in August. In line with new requirements in the Local Government Act, Mandurah Council meetings will be livestreamed for the community from 1 January 2025.
Council has been considering livestreaming its meetings after the first Notice of Motion was brought to Council in 2019 and has been working to procure the technology and equipment needed.
Mayor Rhys Williams said the decision was a positive move towards greater accessibility, and public awareness of the transparency of local government decision making.
“Recording our Council meetings and making them accessible to the public will allow more residents to engage with the decisions that affect our community,” Mayor Williams said.
The introduction of recording Council meetings is expected to provide an opportunity for residents who may not be able to attend meetings in person to stay informed and view the democratic process. It reflects the Council’s commitment to openness and inclusivity in its operations.
“By making the democratic process available online, we are ensuring that we are doing everything possible for our community to be informed, involved and connected to their local government. It’s a great step forward for Mandurah, and I am proud to see this initiative come to fruition,” added Mayor Williams.
Residents will be able to access the recordings from August through the City of Mandurah’s website.
