Let’s celebrate our local sporting heroes!

It’s time to nominate those homegrown sporting role models in the community for the 2021 Mandurah Sports Awards.

Local sports players, clubs, volunteers and those behind the scenes can be nominated for these prestigious awards, which recognise and support Mandurah’s sporting stars.

The awards acknowledge achievement and excellence among the local sporting community, honouring sports people, volunteers and clubs who have a strong connection with, or are based in, Mandurah and have achieved success within their field.

The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club on November 24.

Olympic gymnast and Australian Ninja Warrior star Olivia Vivian will be the special guest speaker on the night.

Now in their seventh year, the Mandurah Sports Awards have celebrated some of Mandurah’s most inspirational and dedicated community members, showcasing the achievements of our homegrown talent.

Mayor Rhys Williams said the awards were a great opportunity for everyone to come together to recognise sporting stars, standout clubs, and those who worked hard in the background to make local sport and recreation a great success.

The City is dedicated to improving the health of the community through sport and recreation, including through the Club Connect club development program, and ensuring community facilities match the growing needs of our groups and clubs.

Wakeboarder Symonne Kennedy was the winner of the 2020 Mandurah Sports Award for the ‘Masters Sports Person of the Year’ category.

Since winning the award last year, Kennedy has been busy with the Wakeboard WA summer season, and State Titles in February. Following reconstructive surgery on her hand once the season was over, Kennedy has been focussing on coaching and running a monthly ‘Ladies of the Lake’ session at the Perth Wake Park.

She had the following message for anyone thinking of entering a Masters competition: “Go for it! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Make sure you’re fit and healthy, your body is strong and prepared but most of all have a positive mindset. That’s very important. You are never too old to learn”.

Nominations for the Mandurah Sports Awards are now open and close on Saturday, September 25 and there are nine categories. Go to www.mandurah.wa.gov.au/sportsawards to make a nomination.
